Responding to the unique natural, architectural, and historical features of Laguna Gloria, sculptors Lauren Fensterstock and Steve Wiman create site-specific installations throughout the Driscoll Villa. Lauren Fensterstock draws inspiration from diverse artistic engagements with landscape, ranging from European garden design to 1970s Earthworks. She constructs her monochromatic landscapes using an abundance of intricately cut and curled black paper crafted in the Victorian quilling tradition. Two dramatic room-sized floor pieces appear to contain the wildness of nature, one a tranquil reflecting pond, and another a teeming mass of vegetation. Fensterstock’s shadowy landscapes are both tempting and threatening as they draw on nature’s beauty and chaos.
To complement Fensterstock’s installation there will be a showing of Robert Smithson’s film Spiral Jetty (1970) on Feb 9 at 7PM.
